Let’s Talk: Cossette’s Animal Crossing Readathon TBR

March 1, 2022

Happy March, little sprouts and seedlings! I’m so excited to share my TBR for the Animal Crossing Readathon, which I’m hosting with my dear friend Saima. While my normal readathon approach is to go in with a loose idea of what I’d like to read, and just hope the books I read fit prompts, I’ve decided to go in with a more established TBR this time around! I’m really hoping to make a dent in my pile of ARCs this month, and to get more into the swing of reading again.

PROMPT (SMUG): Read a Coming of Age Story

It wouldn’t be an island of mine without Marshal on it! Marshal is one of my favorite Animal Crossing villagers, and even though this isn’t a real island, I’m still making sure to include him! Since the tea time reads pick of the month is Ophelia After All by Racquel Marie, I’m making sure to prioritize my reread of it! I absolutely loved reading Ophelia After All last month, and I am so excited to revisit it.

Ophelia Rojas knows what she likes: her best friends, Cuban food, rose-gardening, and boys – way too many boys. Her friends and parents make fun of her endless stream of crushes, but Ophelia is a romantic at heart. She couldn’t change, even if she wanted to.

So when she finds herself thinking more about cute, quiet Talia Sanchez than the loss of a perfect prom with her ex-boyfriend, seeds of doubt take root in Ophelia’s firm image of herself. Add to that the impending end of high school and the fracturing of her once-solid friend group, and things are spiraling a little out of control. But the course of love–and sexuality–never did run smooth. As her secrets begin to unravel, Ophelia must make a choice between clinging to the fantasy version of herself she’s always imagined or upending everyone’s expectations to rediscover who she really is, after all.

PROMPT (PEPPY): Read a Fantasy

Something that I’m really hoping to do this readathon is catch up on my many ARCs! I’m super stoked for Judy I. Lin’s A Magic Steeped in Poison — All I needed to know was “magical tea contest”,  and I was already sold. And while we’re at it, can we talk about how stunning that cover is? Wow. I’ve decided to pair this prompt with the villager Cheri, because she’s got similar pinks to the cover, and I’ve always wanted her on my island!

PROMPT (JOCK): Read a Long Book (Over 500 Pages)

I’ve been slowly listening to the Les Miserables audiobook since January 1st of this year, and I’m about 70% in! I’m pretty hopeful that I’ll be able to finally finish it during the course of the readathon! For my Jock villager, I’m choosing Rudy — he’s my mom’s favorite villager, and I just think he’s so adorable.

PROMPT (NORMAL): Read a Debut Book

I’ve got many debut ARCs to read, but I’m hoping to prioritize Blood Scion, as it’s a physical ARC, and sometimes I just get tired of looking at screens! I’ve heard wonderful things about Blood Scion, especially from Gauri, and I simply cannot wait to get started. I’ve paired this one with Lolly, just because of the blues of the cover, and because Lolly is one of the cutest villagers out there.

PROMPT (NORMAL): Read a book that you think will be a favorite

I’ve been eagerly anticipating I Guess I Live Here Now ever since the ARC landed itself in my inbox! It’s for fans of Never Have I Ever and Crazy Rich Asians, and I just know I’m in for a treat. For my this prompt, I’m picking Poppy as my villager!

PROMPT (LAZY): Read a book centered around food

I’ve heard nothing but great things about The Heartbreak Bakery from Ash (smokedshelves) and Caitlyn — I already know this one is one that I’ll love. I know I said I’d focus on books for book club, and ARCs, but I just couldn’t resist adding The Heartbreak Bakery to my readathon TBR once I was picking out my prompts for a lazy villager. I’m choosing Marty, one of the Sanrio villagers, for this one — he’s just so adorable.

PROMPT (SISTERLY):  Read a book about family, or one spanning different generations

The Fortunes of Jaded Women is one of my most anticipated reads, and I’m so excited to read it! I got a physical ARC a while back, but have been putting it off due to its September release. When Saima and I were coming up with sisterly prompts, I immediately knew I wanted to use The Fortunes of Jaded Women for this one! For my sisterly villager, I decided to go with Faith — she’s such a cute koala!

PROMPT (CRANKY): Read a historical fiction novel

I had to make another exception for my March/April readathon TBR! I’ll be rereading These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong, since Caitlyn and I have something special planned for the blog! I can’t wait to revisit the These Violent Delights world, and also finally annotate Our Violent Ends this read around! I’ve decided to pair this prompt with Gonzo, who I think is one of the cutest crankies ever! Just look at his little face.

PROMPT (SNOOTY): Read a book released between 2020-2022

Literasian Book Club’s March pick is The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh, and I know I’ll have a blast revisiting the beautifully atmospheric world that Oh crafted. I’m pairing this prompt with Whitney, partially because she’s my favorite snooty, and also just because she vaguely reminds me of the cover!

PROMPT (NORMAL): Read a fairytale retelling

I’ll be reading Juniper and Thorne by Ava Reid for this prompt! I’ve heard the most wonderful things about The Wolf and the Woodsman, and I just know that I’ll also love Juniper and Thorne! I’ll be reading both The Wolf and the Woodsman and Juniper and Thorne during this readathon, and pairing it with Maple!

I’ll hopefully be reading more than these ten books and may switch prompts (and villagers) around, but this is my current plan! I’m also going to try to knock off some “NPC prompts” as well! Are you going to be joining the readathon? What are you planning on reading? Let me know in the comments below!
