ANNOUNCEMENT: ANIMAL CROSSING READATHON!

February 11, 2022

Happy Friday! If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you might’ve already seen a little teaser for today’s announcement! Just in case you haven’t though, here’s the teaser:

A photo of a Nintendo Switch OLED with "Animal Crossing Readathon ... loading" on the screen. The Switch is stacked on top of some notebooks and books.

As you may have concluded from the photo, I’m hosting an Animal Crossing themed readathon with one of my best friends, Saima! Saima is one of my favorite people, and I’m so excited that we’re collaborating on this. Both of us love Animal Crossing dearly, and we’ve got so many fun things planned for this readathon. The Animal Crossing Readathon will run from March 1st to April 15th. You can find official prompts below!

To keep up the excitement, we’ll be hosting reading sprints throughout the read-a-thon through our twitter page and Discord server, to keep everyone inspired and motivated. We hope you enjoy this readathon, and have as much fun participating as we did creating and hosting it!

A BRIEF EXPLANATION OF ANIMAL CROSSING NEW HORIZONS

If you’re already familiar with New Horizons, feel free to skip this section!

The gist of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is that you’ve purchased a getaway package from Tom Nook, and have moved into a deserted island. After Tom Nook gives the player essentials, such as a tent, the game proceeds in a non-linear fashion, allowing for the player to play the game as they choose. If you’d like to view the start-up sequence/a walk-through of the player’s first day, click here!

ABOUT THE READATHON

A screenshot from Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Timmy and Tommy are behind a counter, and the Timmy says "It's time to take your passport photo! Say cheese!"

To get started, you’ll first want to create your ‘Passport’. Click here to access the Passport templates. Simply fill in your name, your island’s name, favorite genre to read, and any social media handles you’d like to share! For your passport picture, you can either use a picture from your own character in Animal Crossing, or you can make your own from some picrew makers, such as these (1 and 2). If you’re struggling to customize your passport, try using canva or Photopea!

If you’d like to use the Animal Crossing font, it’s called Fink, and can be found here.

A screenshot from Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Timmy and Tommy are behind a counter, and the Timmy says "That looks great! Now it's time to choose your island name and let us know your favorite genre!"

Here are some examples of passports, if you’re stuck:

An Animal Crossing "passport", filled with Saima's island name (Lindenmere), favorite genre (Mystery) and social media links.
An Animal Crossing "passport", filled with Cossette's island name (woodvale), favorite genre (contemporary) and social media links.
A screenshot from Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Timmy and Tommy are behind a counter, and the Timmy says "Great! Now all that's left is choosing your prompts/villagers"

Once that’s done, it’s time to choose your reading prompts! Each island has anywhere from two to ten villagers at any given point in time, and it’s up to you to determine how many villagers you have. We’ve broken up prompts by each villager type (cranky, jock, lazy, normal, peppy, sisterly, smug, and snooty) to make it a little easier for you! To fill up your island residents, you can choose a range of prompts from different villager personalities, or all of them from one type as well! After picking out your prompts, you can choose villagers that correspond to each personality type from here and upload them to your resident sheet/passport here.

Just like in the game, there are also several NPCs on your island that are a permanent fixture, and some that are visitors! Each NPC has a corresponding prompt, and you’re welcome to choose as many NPC prompts as you’d like.

Whether it’s through getting a villager in your campsite (which we’ll post about on our socials when this happens), a villager asking to leave, or you simply kicking them out, there are many opportunities to switch out the villagers on your island! Don’t fret if you end up wanting a different selection of villagers, or if you simply want to knock out more prompts! You’re also allowed to double up on prompts as much as you’d like.

You can view the list of prompts here or by scrolling to the next section.

While there’s a lot of prompts in this read-a-thon, feel free to pick and choose the ones you feel inspired by! Do as much, or as little, as you’d like to do – the purpose of this is to have fun, make new friends, and read more books!
