Hello my sundrops! Now that we’re in the “ber” months, I am definitely feeling the autumnal vibes, even if the weather around me isn’t.
Now, we all know that I will read the mystery, thriller, horror and dark academia genres all year long as they’re some of my favorites, but I think that autumn is the most perfect time to read these genres specially, and I have a lot that I want to get to between now and the end of November. I thought it would be fun to make an autumn hopefuls list and talk through why I’m excited to read them!
So, grab your coziest blanket (or if you’re in warm weather like me still, have the fan on while you grab that blanket) and let’s talk about some books I’m excited to read during the “ber” months!
When I was 10 years old, I read The Phantom of the Opera. Yes, you read that correctly. The first time I read The Phantom of the Opera I was 10…I do think that tells you pretty much everything that you need to know about me 🤣 now, 23 years later, I think it’s finally time for a reread! I’ve actually been meaning to reread Phantom for years now, but just have never gotten around to it. With the release of Our Strange Duet, which is a Phantom retelling from Christine’s perspective, and the fact that I’m seeing the touring production in October, it feels like the perfect time to reread it!
After rereading Phantom, I’m planning on reading Our Strange Duet. I bought a physical copy of it recently and it is STUNNING. I also got the audiobook because it has some musical theatre actors that I absolutely love and there’s singing???? I’m truly so excited to read it! I’m thinking/hoping to do a compare/contrast post between Phantom, Our Strange Duet and the musical at some point, which is definitely giving me extra motivation to read these this fall!
She Haunts Me Still centers around a theatre major who lands the role of Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, and we all know those are some of my biggest buzzwords, so clearly, it immediately went onto the tbr. It’s set at a sanitarium that was turned liberal arts university, so duh, intrigue is even higher now, and then you add in some ancient magic/evil dating back to the vampire panic of the 18th and 19th century and I truly couldn’t be more excited to read this one. I got a physical copy recently and am actually planning on starting (and hopefully finishing) it this weekend for a readathon I’m participating in.
I hadn’t heard of A Fate Worse Than Drowning until it was announced as a Barnes and Noble pick of the month for, I believe it was August of this year, but I was definitely intrigued once I heard the synopsis. I love stories involving sisters and I love stories that take place by the sea. Add in horror elements and a deal with the devil and you’ve got me intrigued!
I love going into a bookstore, seeing a cover I’ve never seen before and being automatically intrigued and then reading the synopsis and being just as excited about that, which is what happened when I stumbled upon Reliquary. I am such a sucker for a story where someone finally meets their fiancé’s family and you just know that something about them is totally off and it leads to some very horrific situations (I mean, Ready or Not is one of my favorite horror films). I also love private island stories and the isolation that that provides, so I’m definitely looking forward to reading this one.
I most likely don’t need to talk more about Dreamland because I’ve mentioned it multiple times on anticipated lists and books I’m looking forward to reading, but I do think the next few weeks is when I want to read it. It may technically be the fall now, but the weather around here is still pretty dang warm and I think it will be for a while (it’s supposed to be around 90 degrees for a few days next week?????), and with the description saying that this book takes place in the “suffocating late summer heat” this seems like the right time to read it in my neck of the woods!
2 years ago I read Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter and have thought about it so much since then. Her writing is visceral and so descriptive and I’m so excited to dive into another one of her books. I’ve heard really good things about We Are All Guilty Here and I just know that Karin Slaughter is going to deliver a story that keeps me on the edge of my seat.
As with a lot of people I think, Riley Sager can definitely be hit or miss for me, but I’m really intrigued by The Unknown. I really enjoy stories regarding fame, and as I mentioned earlier, I do love stories set on remote islands. This sounds like one of the Riley Sager books that could be a real hit for me, and I really hope that it is!
I hadn’t heard of Fellow Creatures until I got it in a Mindsight box, but I’m very intrigued by it! Anything that involves theatre/drama is going to intrigue me and then if it’s also a mystery I will very quickly add it to my TBR. The edition from Mindsight is absolutely gorgeous, so that makes me extra excited to read it and I’m very curious as to where this story will go!
There we have it! These are some of the books that I’m hoping to read and will be making priorities this fall, as long as I don’t suddenly get some very intense mood reading feelings and completely change my tentative reading plans 🤣
