Book Haul: I ran a 30+ camp summer program for 9 weeks, I deserve some new books!

August 30, 2025

Every summer the theatre company I work for holds summer camps from June through August and as head of the Education Department, it is my job to plan, prep and run the program. There’s a lot of work that goes into planning summer camps; typically I start planning for the following year in late September of the year before. Aside from picking the camp dates (typically 9 weeks), my job responsibilities before camp begins are: deciding on the locations and confirming those with members of the city/local theater, choosing script titles and musical theatre songs, interviewing and staffing every camp with at minimum 3 staff members, setting up and monitoring camp registration, writing and editing scripts, editing songs, ordering and organizing all of our camp supplies, scheduling and planning staff training answering any and all parent questions regarding camps, and running the weekend long camp training.

Once camps begin, it’s 9 weeks of continually prepping for camps as the summer continues, handling parent questions, complaints and concerns, helping teachers handle any issues that come up with students and general questions that they have, arranging substitutes if an emergency comes up, and just general admin work to make sure that everything runs as smoothly as possible. If you couldn’t tell, it’s a lot of work. I’m very lucky to have amazing co-workers who help me whenever and however they can, but it’s still a lot of work and the summer can be pretty exhausting.

We had a very successful summer, but I was absolutely ready for a break! I feel so fortunate that I was able to take 3 weeks off and get some relaxation time in; and one of the things I did was buy some books! I bought quite a few plays in June for my 30 Plays in 30 Days challenge, and I bought one book in July, but I wanted to wait until I was finished with camp to do a big book haul, so once I was on break I headed over to the bookstore and decided to 👏🏼 treat 👏🏼 my 👏🏼self 👏🏼!

Mini Reviews: Reading Only Mystery/Thriller Books for a Week

August 19, 2025

We all know I love a good reading challenge, so I thought that with my first week of vacation time I would challenge myself to only read two genres. Since they’re my favorites, I obviously went with the mystery and thriller genres; especially since I have multiple unread mystery and thrillers on my physical tbr.

Over the course of the week I ended up finished 5 books and started a 6th! Now let’s get into the reviews!

Review: Not Quite Dead Yet by Holly Jackson

July 22, 2025

In seven days Jet Mason will be dead.

Jet is the daughter of one of the wealthiest families in Woodstock, Vermont. Twenty-seven years old, she’s still waiting for her life to begin. I’ll do it later, she always says. She has time.

Until Halloween night, when Jet is violently attacked by an unseen intruder.

She suffers a catastrophic head injury. The doctor is certain that within a week, the injury will trigger a deadly aneurysm.

Jet has never thought of herself as having enemies. But now she looks at everyone in a new light: her family, her former best friend turned sister-in-law, her ex-boyfriend.

She has at most seven days, and as her condition deteriorates she has only her childhood friend Billy for help. But nevertheless, she’s absolutely determined to finally finish something:

Jet is going to solve her own murder.

Mini Reviews: 30 Plays in 30 Days Readathon

July 20, 2025

Towards the end of May I thought “You know, it would be fun to read all of the Tony nominated plays this year!” which then turned into “I’m gonna read a play for every day in June” and suddenly my 30 plays in 30 days readathon was born!

For someone who lives and breathes theatre, I actually don’t read plays as often as one would think (excluding Shakespeare); plays aren’t as accessible as musicals are, but I do buy a lot of plays, especially whenever I’m in New York since it’s not a NYC trip if I don’t go to the Drama Book Shop multiple times. Because of this, a lot of unread plays have gathered on my shelves, and that was another incentive to me deciding to do this reading challenge. I knew that in doing so I’d get through all of the unread plays on my shelves which meant that I actually had to buy some new plays (I know, I had to, it was a real sacrifice) to make it to 30! I mean, I could’ve read 3 other Oscar Wilde plays, but I wanted to limit it to one unread play per author, so I decided against that.

Anyway, I finished my 30 plays in 30 days readathon on June 29th, and I’m honestly so proud of myself for actually completing the readathon! Yes, plays are typically short, but reading 30 in 30 days, especially during the busiest time of my work year, is quite an accomplishment. It was also so much fun! I got to read a lot of plays that I’ve been wanting to read for years, discovered some new ones and found some new favorites!

Since I read all of these, I figured I just had to make a post of mini reviews for them, so get comfy and cozy and let’s chat about the 30 plays I read in June!

(Please note that some of the plays I talk about include mentions of death, murder and rape)

Tag: Mid-Year Freak Out Tag

July 11, 2025

Y’all know what time it is! It’s mid-year freak out tag time! I love doing this tag every year because it’s so fun to look back at everything I’ve read so far and see what the standouts were, new favorites, ones that didn’t deliver and what I’m looking forward to for the rest of the year!

From January to June I read 109 books and for some categories it was easy to find a clear winner and others were a little tricky. I also tried as hard as I could to not repeat books but…when it’s good it’s good and there are a few books that appear in multiple categories for multiple reasons because well, it’s my mid-year freak out tag and I can assign winners as I want to. (I was trying to make a “it’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to” reference there, not sure if it worked the way I wanted it to…)

Anyway! Let’s get into the tag!

TBR: Summerween 2025

June 17, 2025

Friends, can you believe it? Summerween is almost here and I am thrilled! If you don’t know, the Summerween readathon is hosted by Gabby from GabbyReads on BookTube, and it’s a readathon that takes place every summer specifically to read thriller and horror novels. This summer the readathon is running from July 5th – 12th, so there’s still plenty of time to prepare if you want to participate! This will be my 3rd Summerween and I am so excited. I look forward to it every summer (especially all the cute merch!) and I wanted to share my — not at all ambitious… — tbr with y’all!
