It’s well into winter here in Australia, and more often than not I have found myself curled up under a blanket devouring book after book. There’s something so calming about reading while it’s raining, and I thought I’d share today some of my favourite picks for reading in this weather. So, keep reading if you want to know my five rainy day read recommendations!
- Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé.
This book is truly phenomenal, and it has my entire heart and soul. As one of our June picks for teatimereads, I read this during the build up to winter, and it was the perfect fit. The atmosphere in this book is unsettling in a good way, the mystery and thriller leaving the reader on the edge of their seat. I couldn’t put this book down, and I can’t stop recommending this book to every single person I know. I cannot wait to see what Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé writes next, because I know they have a long and successful writing career ahead of them. You can read Cossette’s full review for this book here.

- Down Comes the Night by Allison Saft
Another favourite appearing on this list! This book is wonderful, and it’s another I can’t stop recommending to people. The dark, gothic vibes in this book are unparalleled, and it’s enthralling to read. Saft has a captivating writing style that engages the reader from the first page, and leaves them wanting more and more. Not only is the atmosphere perfect in this book, but it’s a great enemies-to-lovers romance which I know everyone will be gushing over. It pains me to see this book continue to be underhyped in the bookish community, because I know it has so many of the tropes we all love. Pair it with a nice, warm cup of tea and a fuzzy blanket and you have the perfect reading experience. Soon, you’ll find yourself transported into the depths of Colwick Hall alongside Wren, Hal and everyone else you’ll meet on the way. - Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
I knew I wanted to include a classic on this list, and I figured Little Women would be perfect. I’m currently rereading this book during peak winter, and I tell you, it makes the reading experience all the more pleasant. I read this book for the first time recently and I was honestly surprised at how much I loved it. I didn’t expect to, and it soon became one of my favourite classics. I see a lot of myself in each of the characters, and I enjoy the dynamics between each of the sisters and characters as the story progresses. And, let’s face it, who isn’t reading just for Amy and Laurie? If you haven’t read this book yet and you’ve been wanting to, the winter time is perfect for it. That being said, if you haven’t got the time to read it, the 2019 film version is a very good option, too.

- Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas
Okay, so I definitely feel like I recommend this book a lot but I promise it’s warranted. This book is fantastic, and I know our readers will adore it. I read this book via audiobook last year and ever since it’s been one of my favourites. Everything about it is just so magically wonderful! I love all of the characters, and Thomas has a way of writing that is just so compelling and lovely. This story is full of beautiful prose, interesting character dynamics and a love story that just makes your heart soar. I cannot wait to reread this gem, and fall in love with it all over again. Grab your blankets and let’s jump into reading it!

- Much Ado About You by Samantha Young
If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be cozy. Cossette recommended this one to me, claiming I would adore it, and she told no lie. This book is so charming, and just brings me a lot of joy. Set in an English countryside, this book is full of dreary weather and sunshine characters, wrapped up in a romance that makes my heart happy. This book is centred around a bookshop, too, so it adds even more coziness with that feature itself. Samantha Young has a very easy writing style to read, and I found myself devouring this book in one sitting. It’s truly a joy to read, and I cannot wait to curl up with a hot chocolate and read it again
