Wrap Up: April 2021

Happy end of April! This was a pretty good reading month for us overall, and we’ve all read some wonderful books! We’re so excited to continue out reading into next month, and we can’t wait to see what wonderful posts our fellow bloggers produce. We recently announced our teatimereads book for May, and we’re so excited to read The House on the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune. This month Caitlyn read 17 books, Cossette read 17 books, and Mary read 9 books.

This month was a great month for me reading wise, not so great sleep wise, which you can tell by the number of books that I read. This month, I read 17 books and really enjoyed them all. I did a fair amount of rereading this month (7 of my 17 books were rereads), as I always find it comforting to reread old favorites. I also tend to turn on audiobooks that I’ve already read to help me fall asleep. This month was also really fun because I dedicated all of my blog posts were dedicated to William Shakespeare. I read Richard III, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Winter’s Tale. I also read some works inspired by Shakespeare. I reread my favorite, If We Were Villains and finally wrote something on it, which you can check out here (post includes major spoilers). I also read Speak Easy, Speak Love by McKelle George (review here) and Foul is Fair by Hannah Capin retellings of Much Ado About Nothing and Macbeth respectively. Both of which, I thoroughly enjoyed. I got to a couple ARCs this month, The Ivies by Alexa Donne and Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong, both of which were wild rides that I enjoyed every minute of. I also read House of Hollow this month and was completely enamored with it. I’m a little behind on my non-fiction reading goal for the year, so next month I’ll definitely try to read some non-fiction. Next month, I’m especially looking forward to Morgan Matson’s latest release Take Me Home Tonight which is at the top of my TBR, and I’ll be working on catching up on my ARCs…yes, I know I say that every month.

Posts I Loved Reading: 

  • It’s no secret that I love dark academia, but one thing the genre is severely lacking is stories about people of color. I loved this post of dark academia book recs by authors of color! There are some already on my TBR and some that I’ve added. 
  • These Violent Delights is, as we know, one of my favorite books, so I love hearing what my friends think of it. I loved Ahaana’s review and agree with everything she said!
  • I’ve been loving Rachel Lynn Solomon’s works – I can’t wait to read We Can’t Keeep Meeting Like This. So I’ve had You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone on my radar for a while now. My best friend, Helena, wrote a great post about it here!
  • The Ones We’re Meant to Find is one that I’m really looking forward to, and Bella wrote a review of it that has made me even more excited about it!

What a month this has been! This month, I read 17 books, and I truly feel like I’m out of my slump. While some books I read were a little more questionable, I also read some books that are definitely going to be some new favorites — I had many 5 star reads this month!  More notably, Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutano, We Can’t Keep Meeting Like This by Rachel Lynn Solomon, Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, Indivisible by Daniel Aleman, and Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong. I’m sincerely behind on my goal to read more non-fiction this year, but I finally picked up Minor Feelings by Cathy Park Hong as a buddy read with my work bestie! Next month, I’m really excited to catch up on my ARCs (which I know I say every month, but really, past Cossette should not have ever mass-requested on Netgalley), to finally read The House in the Cerulean Sea (our teatimereads pick!), as well as Interior Chinatown, which I’ll be reading for a new book club that I started with rainstormreads and our friend Anshu — Literasian Book Club (find out more about it here)!

Posts I Loved Reading: 

This month I feel like I’ve redeemed myself! I’m definitely out of my reading slump now, and I can’t wait to continue my reading spree into May. Life is slowing down and uni is getting better, so I find myself with more free time to read. This month I read 9 books, and I loved all of them. My most loved book this month was The Crown of Gilded Bones by Jennifer L. Armentrout, which was my most anticipated book of the year. If you know me, you know I love From Blood and Ash, and this book was no disappointment. If you want to know my full thoughts, you can find them in my review here! I also picked up Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Sutanto. This month I have also seriously gravitated towards romance novels. Cossette is a big fan, and set me up with some recommendations, and I can safely say I will be staying in this genre for a while. My favourite of her recommendations was Beach Read, which Coco had been speaking so highly of – and now I can see why! It’s honestly the perfect romance book, and I already want to reread it! I look forward to (hopefully) another strong reading month – it feels good to be back in the reading momentum!
