Let’s Talk: Mary’s Favourite Female Characters

April 18, 2022

Hi, hello friends! I hope you’re all doing super well, and had a lovely Easter if you celebrate. This week, I thought it would be fun to talk about some of my favourite female characters! I have so many, so narrowing it down to this list was pretty hard but let’s get onto the list!

  1. Celia Bowen from The Night Circus

I don’t think this one will be a shock to anyone. Celia is a character that means a whole lot to me, and I think a lot of people can see themselves in her. No matter how hard times get during the book, Celia remains kind. Her intentions and decisions are fuelled by kindness, and I think it’s an admirable trait to have. With this kindness, she is a strong young woman who knows what she wants and how to get it. She doesn’t let anyone treat her badly, and she stands up for those in her life. I think Celia is such a strong character, and it makes me so happy I have her in my life!

  1. Shiori from Six Crimson Cranes

Six Crimson Cranes was genuinely one of my favourite books of 2021! This YA fantasy was everything I could’ve dreamed of, and I genuinely can’t stop thinking about it. Shiori is a wonderful protagonist – and I simply adored her story. She’s a lovely woman who has endless love for her siblings. I’m anxiously awaiting the second book, to see how much Shiori grows from book one. If you haven’t picked this book up yet, I highly recommend that you do!

  1. Meddelin Chan from Dial A for Aunties

This! Book! Honestly, I could write an essay as to why I adore this book so much, and Meddy is definitely one of the reasons! Not only is she absolutely hilarious, but she just feels so real. A lot of her decisions in this book are rooted in her love for her family, and it’s something I love reading about. She loves fiercely and loyally, all while seeing the humour and light in a lot of situations. I mean, being able to laugh through covering up a murder? We love to see it! I think Meddy is just someone who, if real, would be your ride or die, and I adore that quality in a heroine.

  1. Lila Reyes from A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow

Lila and I already have something in common: our mutual love for Winchester. I’ve gone into a lot of detail before about this book (my full review can be found here), and how much I adore it, but I simply won’t stop talking about it. Lila is a strong, independent girl who goes through a lot of self discovery in this book. Despite being thrown into some crappy situations, Lila faces them with confidence; not letting them truly get her down. She’s sweet and kind and a wonderful friend, and I think she has a lot of qualities I hope to have myself! She’s very resilient, and I loved being able to see her personal growth throughout the book. I think we could all be a little bit more like Lila.

And there we have it, four of my favourite female characters! I have definitely left some off of this list, and maybe I will do a second part some time in the future, but be sure to let me know below your thoughts!

Happy reading!
