Hi, hello friends and welcome back to teatimelit! I love book to screen adaptations, and I think there are a lot of books out there that have serious potential to make good tv shows or movies. While I know that not everything can be made into the next blockbuster hit, I thought it would be super fun today to talk about some of the books I think would make good adaptations. Let’s get into the list!
- Luck of the Titanic by Stacey Lee
I loved this book so much! I read it for the first time at the end of the year per Cossette’s recommendation, and I’m so glad I did. I think this book would be such a good mini series, and I’d love to see how they’d tackle a lot of the key plot points while staying true to the historical aspect. I personally love period dramas, and I just get the feeling Luck of the Titanic would translate so well onto the screen. From the costumes to the acrobatics, I think a mini series based on this book would be a huge success, and a super fun show to watch. Bring your tissues, though — I think it would be a bit of a tear jerker.
- Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim
A loose Mulan retelling inspired by Project Runway? Yes, please! I think Spin the Dawn would be an absolutely fantastic book to turn into a tv show, and I would love to see it happen. The story itself is so lush and so exciting; I think it would be easy to turn it into a series. This was one of my favourite books of 2021, and I’d love to see it become even better on either the big screen or the small screen. I love imagining how they would create all of the magical costumes, especially as the plot goes into Unravel the Dusk. Honestly, if you give it the same budget as Shadow and Bone, production companies would have a guaranteed hit on their hands.
- Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
I am absolutely begging for this to be turned into a tv show. The dark academia, the fashion, the overall atmosphere? Chef’s kiss. I think this book would be a great addition to the current teen tv shows that have already been made, and it would be perfectly produced by Netflix! Ace of Spades explores deep rooted racism, classism and even queerphobia in an academic setting, all while adding a touch of mystery throughout the midst, and I would love to see these important topics discussed and explored in a largely accessible format. Ace of Spades would be the most bingeable show, and I am eagerly praying for this to be optioned. I also think Ace of Spades deals with some very important issues that are not often seen in teenaged aimed tv shows, so I’d love to see it be picked up and tackled. If anyone at any television company is reading this, I am honestly begging for an adaptation.
- Amelia Unabridged by Ashley Schumacher
While the rest of this list seems to be aimed at tv shows, I think Amelia Unabridged would make a beautiful film. When I read this book for the first time I couldn’t stop crying – it reminded me a lot of my friendship with my best friend, and it was so difficult reading about a life where she wasn’t around anymore. I think Amelia Unabridged would be a great way to showcase this exploration of grief in a film aimed at a younger audience. One of the big parts of Amelia Unabridged is the fantasy novel the main characters are obsessed with, and I’d love to see how they would translate that onto the screen. I’d definitely go to opening day to watch Amelia Unabridged if they ever made it into a film!
- Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
I don’t think anyone is surprised to see this one on this list, but I am absolutely itching for a Legendborn television series. Not only is it one of the best YA fantasies on the market right now, but it’s so unique that nothing is really comparable. I would love to see them tackle not only the vast magic system, but the Arthurian legends that come alongside it. Imagine the historical flashbacks, the secret societies and everything else we love about Legendborn translated into tv. One of the things I love about Legendborn is that it almost redefines the YA fantasy genre with its originality and creativity, and I would love to see that continue in a fantasy tv show. A lot of my friends love Legendborn, so I already know it would be an absolute fan favourite if made for tv.
And there we have it! My picks for book-to-screen adaptations I’d love to see happen. Let me know below some of your picks, and I’ll see you all next week!
